Last week was rather humdrum insomuch as I can't remember doing or seeing much that hadn't happened before. Normally, I enjoy repeating things, running routes I've run a hundred, or even a thousand, times over the last 34 years.
My 1,000th plus run over Castle Hill (Click to enlarge) |
At different times of day, in different lighting, at different times of year, there is almost always something new. The last seven days seemed to be the exception.
Greenfinch |
I was feeling a little off colour, as green as that bird on the feeders, as if someone had switched the power off or sneaked a slow release sleeping pill into my evening glass of wine. The world passed by in a blur.
Grimwith on a dreich morning |
Our run round Grimwith left me cold and unmoved. In the early hours it was cold and grim, what the Scots would call dreich, and before long it began to spot with rain. "Let's just get this over with" I thought.
Fly past |
Surprisingly for the time of year there was an almost total absence of bird life, no pewits wheeling around the sky, no mallard squawking or teal whistling across the water: except, as we ran to the finish along the dam wall, a gaggle of greylags cheered us with their noisy fly past.
All in all I ran a total of 13 miles.
Unlucky for some...
Hope this week gets better for you. Greylag geese always make me smile. We were adopted by one who'd lost his chums many years ago and he hooked up with a pair of ducks for a while. He came to the back door for breakfast every morning and we named him Gandalf as I was reading The Hobbit at the time.
ReplyDeleteThanks Susie. I trotted up Castle Hill this morning to watch the solstice sunrise and felt fine. Maybe it's the lingering trauma of all the mess caused by having my secondary glazing ripped out and 22 completely new windows fitted that's sapped my energy...
DeleteYou have time to read?
13 miles is a good run!
ReplyDeleteSorry it wasn't as enjoyable this time and hope this week is better. : )
Thanks Karen, it was a better week. Managed to get back into my stride again.
DeleteHappy walking....
It happens to every runner Old Runningfox one of those moments that can last weeks that for some reasons there is no joy in running and it is hard to find the motivation back again , and I have got right now one of those periods , my way to overcome it is going to fell races all over the district, also 3 times in a week and I do not mind to be almost the last one or second last especially if I have not been before , new places and to meet old friends it is very refreshing for new motivations . Antonio .
ReplyDeleteThanks Antonio, I'm almost back firing on all cylinders again after a wonderful week running in the sun.
DeleteI don't think I'll be doing any fell races though - and doubt you will with another 20+ years on your back!
Happy running......
Do hope this week improves for you …
ReplyDeleteMind you 13 miles is not bad!!!
All the best Jan
Stretched it to 21 miles last week Jan. I'm happy with that.
DeleteAll the best to you too......
21 miles!
DeleteThat's great!
It's much warmer this week, so should be lovely for your runs … provided it doesn't get too hot!
All the best Jan
