Life gets in the way......

After two excellent mid-week runs, the first of which TomTom said was the fastest short run it had recorded to date, life and a minor injury got in the way of any further running last week.
Tuesday's 3.08 miles, 280ft of ascent with 15 short hill reps to boot, and back home before sunrise, was pretty nifty, I thought, for an ancient octogenarian.. A blood red sky at breaking dawn was an added bonus but I'd no camera to record it - so here's a picture from the week before.

Thursdays run was similar but a little farther with a couple more hill reps and a tiny bit slower.  At my time of life short mid-week runs with bits of intensity thrown in to boost the heart rate are ideal for maintaining fitness to enjoy longer, relaxed runs around our glorious countryside at weekends.  That's the theory....Last weekend things didn't quite go according to plan.

A phone call at noon on Saturday heralded the arrival of a large dumpy bag of kiln dried logs.  To his credit the wagon driver maneuvered the bag as close to the log shed as he could but we'd an awful lot of work transferring and stacking.
Wobbling my way up the crag on Sunday...
At some stage, while trying to drag the bag nearer the shed door, my feet shot from under me and I fell heavily backward, wrenching my Lt shoulder and bashing my Rt elbow.
I didn't feel like running after that!
...and recovering in the sun at the top
Nor on Sunday when I was maybe still suffering some after-shock.  We walked up the crag but I was terrified of slipping and jarring my shoulder again.  And I'd been forbidden to swallow 600mg of Ibuprofen having already taken that amount before Church in the morning.
I'm not sure when I'll run again.  Outside the window is a white world rimed with frost and the forecast is for fog and 34ºF.
I may have a lie in...

  1. Thats a good bag of wood I'm impressed that you even tried to move it. I would have just carried the logs one and full at a time! is that enough wood to keep you warm through the winter... I need that much to braai through the summer!

    1. You've no idea how heavy that bag is Coach, or how heavily I fell when I let go of the damn thing! Haven't run since. But I will.....
      Cheers!

  2. Happy New Year Gordon. Good to hear that you seem to have avoided the Lurgy. Unlike us...

    1. Oops, I wished you Happy New Year without absorbing the detail of your posting - beyond the fact that you'd started the year with a couple of nice runs. I do hope you feel better soon. We still have to go on our first runs of 2018, having been floored by the Lurgy. Is it too much to hope that our chronic injuries may have benefited from the break? Sadly, I doubt it.

    2. And A Very Happy New Year to you Martin, when you're fully recovered from that dreadful lurgy. It's so far bypassed me though many of my friends have been struck down. I blame all those get-togethers at Christmas and New Year for sharing such nasties!
Keep on running/walking/blogging - or whatever. Gotta keep inspiring them young 'uns.... Cheers!

  3. Oh no , come on Old Runningfox , I did not like to see you on the last two pics where you look very sad and beaten by bad luck coming your way , I have never seen you like that before , it would be really scaring for us when a fighter like you , would surrender at this nasty accident of yours , get out running soon , all the best for you for a good recovery . 1. Hey, steady on Antonio, I was a bit shook up and unsteady on my feet for a couple of days, but I haven't thrown in the towel yet. As I said, a bit of after-shock with a few aches and pains that cramped my style, but I'm not done yet. Anyhow, the pain has gone, the spirit revived. I'll be back running tomorrow. Honest!
All the best and a Very Happy New Year to you from Old Runningfox.

  4. A fall like that isn't pleasant and it is true the older we get the slightly longer time it takes for recovery.
I hope by now you are feeling a lot better and looking forward to your next run.

Your first and last photo's really show the glorious sunny but cool weather.
    Take care out there.

    All the best Jan

    1. You're so right Jan, it takes a lot longer to recover from a hard fall nowadays - and a lot more Ibuprofen... I'm not so indestructible as some would think!
Sunday was indeed gloriously sunny, ideal for running. Maybe next Sunday?
All the best to you too....
      Cheers!
